It is known that you can become a villain , or a hero. Christian Bale is now a villain, this time for Marvel’s Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is strong and the plot stays true to the comic-book storyline as well. The film also features the popular character of the audience, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). There’s, of course, the outrageous humor that is unique to director Taika Waititi. And yet, Love and Thunder, although it’s a solid standalone film, doesn’t quite perform as well as the previous Thor sequel, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a vital part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade now However, his individual films have either hit the mark or have missed it completely. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was a mediocre entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a nice beginning. And yet, anyone’s list of the top five MCU films will contain Thor: Ragnarok (2017) absolutely. The return of the Hemsworth-Taika waititi collaboration was a sign that expectations were at an all-time high ahead of the film’s release.
Gorr (Bale), god of the gods who wishes to eliminate all gods attacks New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god butcher by joining up with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend, who is now Mighty Thor. The plot is simple, unlike in Marvel’s recent films, and the performances are positive in this film. Hemsworth aces the titular character who is experiencing the midlife crisis, however Bale and Portman stand out. For proof of Bale’s skills and his eminence, the pre-title credit sequence stands. Gorr could have been the new Thanos within the MCU. Bale adds a mysterious aspect to the character , but there isn’t much else.
Portman plays Mjolnir’s cancerous ex-girlfriend. In light of the fact that Marvel is committed to handing over the mantles of Hawkeye and, in the next few months, Hulk, to women characters, I first expected that the Mighty Thor to be a comparable tick on the checklist of representation. The film tells an emotional tale of an astrophysicist who is able to show her biceps more than one.
Marvel is known for its own flexing, too, through all the cameos featured in the film. We also see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast that includes Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprising their roles as Thor: Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor in turn. Additionally, we see Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of the Asgardian play and the director of the play. Waititi has since Ragnarok directed Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his preferred genre. It’s hilarious to watch an image of a couple of noisy goats , as well as Korg’s narration about Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie is Old Spice’s spokesperson.
There’s also a running gag of Thor wanting to retrieve his Mjolnir while being afraid by Stormbreaker’s jealousy. Unfortunately, these gags, although effective, come at the expense of deep emotions and expose the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder deals with many types love, from father-daughter bonds to complex romances between estranged lovers… There’s an analogy between Gorr losing respect for Rapu and Thor becoming disillusioned at Zeus (played here by Russell Crowe). It’s all great ideas but…
Like always, there are numerous easter eggs to be found or even references to films such as Interstellar as well as Harry Potter. The camera shows the god that died, Falligar, taken straight from comic books. We can see Hemsworth putting on the original Thor costume that comic book readers will recognize. When Thor shows his true colors during an argument with Zeus, we get to observe a tattoo which reads “RIP Loki as well as the trickster’s helmet etched on the back of our space-based Viking. The terrible Necrosword is introduced and it’s interesting to see how more weapons are shown to be capable of controlling individuals, considering the way Stormbreaker and Mjolnir appear to have their own thoughts.
This is what we saw in Shang Chi’s ten rings as well as Ms. Marvel’s magical Bangle, and the Ebony blade from the Eternals post-credits scene. The quote “Gods are not empowering you however, they will utilize the power of God to help you” from Marvel’s new show, Moonknight, feels very similar to the real world. There’s a reference to Valkyrie losing her beloved partner in battle and Korg falling in love with another Kronan man.
The first half of the film reminds us of the vibrant colors we enjoyed in Ragnarok The majority of the second half is in the dark world where everything is black and white. It is true that the action scenes shot in monochrome are quite satisfying.
Hemsworth as Thor will remain in the role but it’s a relief to MCU fans who’ve watched the original Avengers either sacrifice their lives, or hang up their boots.
